How to Work With Claude (Not Just Ask It Things)

  • A clean, mid-century style illustration in muted earthy tones showing a human and a softly geometric non-human figure sitting across from each other at a simple wooden table. A small potted plant sits between them, suggesting a relaxed and friendly conversation in a peaceful setting.

A practical guide for small business owners, startups, and teams who want more than generic answers.

If you've tried Claude — or any AI assistant — and walked away thinking "that was… fine, I guess," you're not alone. Most people start the same way: type a question, read the answer, use maybe 10% of it.

The problem isn't the tool. It's the approach.

Claude works best when you treat it less like a search engine and more like a thinking partner. Here's how to make that shift — and actually get work done.

Stop asking. Start solving

There's a difference between:

"Write me a bio for my website."

and

"I'm a freelance photographer specializing in corporate events. My clients are mid-size companies in logistics and tech. I want my bio to feel approachable but credible — not stuffy. Here's what I want to communicate: [list]. Can you draft a few versions?"

The second one gets you something usable. The first gets you something generic.

Claude doesn't know your business, your voice, or your goals — unless you tell it. The more context you give, the more useful the output.

Think of it as a conversation, not a command

One of the most common mistakes: treating Claude like a vending machine. Insert prompt, receive content. Done.

But Claude is designed for back-and-forth. You can:

  • Ask for a first draft, then say "make it shorter and less formal"
  • Get an outline, then say "expand on section 3 — I want to go deeper there"
  • Share what you don't like: "this sounds too salesy — can we try a different angle?"

That push-and-pull is where the real value shows up.

Give it a role

Claude responds well to framing. Instead of starting cold, try:

"You're helping me write content for a small eco-friendly cleaning company. Our tone is friendly and down-to-earth — we're talking to busy parents who care about what's in their products, but don't want a science lecture."

Now Claude has a lens to work through. Everything it generates will be filtered by that context — and you'll stop getting responses that feel like they could've been written for anyone.

This is especially useful when you're working on something that needs a consistent voice: website copy, email campaigns, social media, client communications.

Use it for thinking, not just writing

Claude isn't only a writing tool. It's genuinely useful when you need to think something through:

  • A tricky decision"I'm choosing between two pricing models. Here's what I see as the pros and cons. What am I missing?"
  • A difficult conversation"I have to talk to a client tomorrow about a delayed project. Help me think through how to approach it."
  • Getting unstuck"I've been going in circles on this for a week. Here's the situation — what questions should I be asking?"
  • Testing your own ideas"Here's a plan I'm considering. What's the strongest argument against it?"

Sometimes the most valuable output isn't a finished document. It's a clearer head.

A note on working with Allabor

At Allabor, Claude is part of how our team works — for research, drafting, reviewing, and thinking through strategy. But here's what's relevant to you: when we collaborate with clients who are also using Claude, there's a real continuity to the work.

You can share drafts, directions, or even rough notes, and we can pick up from where you are — not from scratch. It makes the process faster and more aligned. No lengthy briefs to write just to get started.

If you're already using Claude (even casually), mention it. It might change how we work together.

Where to start today

Next time you open Claude, try this before typing a quick question: spend 30 seconds giving it context. Who you are. What you're trying to solve. What a good outcome looks like for you.

Then see what happens.

So, What Is Claude?
